Smash Factor Golf!
Every golfer on the planet regardless of skill level wants to hit the golf ball further. For many golfers, this means a never-ending search for the best equipment. What golf ball will increase ball speed? Will this new TaylorMade driver provide 10 more yards? Does this training tool improve ball striking?
If you've asked yourself these questions then undoubtedly you've also asked yourself, “how do I get more distance out of my golf shots?”. If so then you’ve probably heard of the term “smash factor.” Maybe it was at the driving range or while you were watching golf on TV. But what exactly is smash factor, and why should you care about it? Let’s take a closer look at this important golf concept.
What Is Smash Factor?
Smash factor is a numerical representation that measures how much energy is transferred from the golf club to the ball. It does this by calculating the ratio of your ball speed in relation to your club head speed. In other words, it tells you how many MPH of ball speed you achieve for each 1MPH of Club Head Speed. The higher the smash factor, the more efficient and accurate your ball striking is!
How Do You Calculate Smash Factor?
Calculating your smash factor is fairly simple - divide your ball speed by club head speed and voila! You have your smash factor. For example, if your ball speed was 170mph and your club head speed was 120mph, then your smash factor would be 1.41 (170/120). The perfect Smash Factor, as measured through scientific analysis, is 1.5 – meaning that the ball should leave the club face with a speed one and a half times greater than the speed of the head at impact. Anything lower than 1.5 means that there’s room for improvement in terms of efficiency and accuracy.
Why Does Smash Factor Matter?
Smash factor matters because it’s an indicator of how efficiently you are transferring energy from your swing into the golf club and ultimately to the golf ball itself. Simply put, if you want to maximize distance off every shot (who doesn't!) then having a high smash factor is critical. And making sure you have a high smash factor is all about hitting the golf ball as close to the center of the club face as possible!
Additionally, having an efficient transfer of energy also helps improve accuracy since poor contact can lead to wayward shots and lost golf balls in no time flat! So if you want to shave strokes off of your scorecard quickly – or if you just want to hit consistently long drives - then improving your smash factor should be at the top of your list!
Biggest Factors Affecting Your Smash Factor?
Ball Striking
The key to maximizing your smash factor is consistent ball striking. The key to consistent ball striking is hitting the golf ball in the center of the club face. Let's delve a little deeper into this.
The average men's sing speed is almost 94 MPH. Interestingly that is similar to the average swing speed of LPGA pros. However, on average LPGA tour players drive the ball almost 250 yards. That is 30 yards further than the average male player with the same swing speed.
So if you want more distance and a higher smash factor worry less about your swing speed and more about hitting the sweet spot.
Swing Path
A high smash factor is the result of an efficient swing with solid fundamentals. This starts with the right setup and the correct swing path. A poor swing path will result in more mishits and a lower smash factor.
Angle of Attack
The correct angle of attack is critical to finding the center of the club face. If your downswing is too steep, especially with the driver you're going to lose ball speed and generate too much backspin. Remember you want low spin off the driver and longer clubs in your bag.
Clubface
Make sure you have a square clubface at impact. An open or closed clubface will decrease the smash factor.
Swing Speed
Everybody knows swing speed is critical but if you're swinging harder and hitting your driver off the toe or heel you are not going to like the results. You are much better slowing down your swing and becoming more efficient by hitting the sweet spot. Solid ball contact is the key here and will result in longer drives.
All you have to do is take a look at the ladies playing on the tour. We discussed their efficiency above talking about ball striking. Surprisingly or maybe not, they are even more efficient than PGA pros.
The Right Equipment
Finally, having the right equipment is critical to the success of any serious golfer and maximizing your smash factor. Make sure your clubs are correctly fit for you - the correct length, shaft flex, and grip size. If you are a high handicapper consider game improvement irons.
Take advantage of technology and newer model drivers. Adding a new more forgiving driver could add 5 yards or more on your mishits. And for the best results invest in a professional club fitting.
The same goes for choosing golf balls. Look for golf balls that match your swing speed - low compression golf balls for a slower swing speed, higher compression balls for faster swings.
